Great Blue Heron Mural

Congratulations! You have found the  Great Blue Heron mural located at Joyce Park! Read the following text and write down some facts on your form.

Walk along the banks of any river in Ohio and a Great Blue Heron can give you quite a start. This massive bird has an equally massive call, which it often uses when disturbed from its fishing spot. It can make your heart miss a few beats to see and hear a “Great Blue” up close and personal.

Great Blue Herons rely on almost lightning-quick thrusts of their bill to catch their prey. Sometimes they stand perfectly still waiting for prey to drift close enough to strike. Suddenly, their sharp bill pierces the water, and their prey. Gulp, there goes another meal. Other times, you might see a heron stalking its prey, walking ever so slowly on its stilt-like legs. Their diet includes frogs, snakes, fish, salamanders…just about anything making the mistake to meander by too closely.
