HISTORY

To honor the patriotism and generosity of Michael J. Colligan (1926-1994), this building was re-dedicated on May 18, 2001.

Erected in 1932 by the American Legion on land leased to it by the City of Hamilton, it served as the clubhouse of the Frank Durwin Post, American Legion, until 1945. Mr. Durwin was the first Hamilton soldier killed in World War I. For a number of years, Hamilton's Parks and Recreation Department was headquartered here.

The building sat vacant until its restoration in 2000-01. Leadership Hamilton Class IV (1994-95) became very interested in the restoration and appropriate use of this building. Their appreciation of this facility and their determination inspired the Hamilton Community Foundation to make their dream a reality.

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the Foundation announced several major legacy gifts to the community. One of those gifts was restoring this building to its original state and making significant improvements: A new kitchen, new restrooms, the added terrace and extensive landscaping.
